On Sunday, June 1st, Bishop Alan McGuckian, Bishop of Down & Connor, returned to Slieve Patrick (Saul) to celebrate Mass. In his homily, he warmly welcomed pilgrims from across the diocese and encouraged everyone to embrace the call to be “Pilgrims of Hope” in this Jubilee Year
As part of this special occasion, Bishop McGuckian received the Sacred Heart Pilgrim Statue, blessed by Pope Francis, officially welcoming it into the Diocese of Down & Connor
A Joyful Procession from Saul to Downpatrick
The following evening, Monday, June 2nd, the Pilgrim Statue was reverently processed by road from Saul to Downpatrick, a journey of two and a half miles. The procession, under the watchful care of the Knights of St. Columbanus CK12, was marked by joy, prayer, and a strong sense of community
The clergy accompanying the pilgrimage included Fr Aidan Brankin (Parish Priest of Saul), Deacon Jackie Breen, Fr Gerry McCloskey, and Fr Henry McCann. Together with parishioners from across the Family of Parishes and beyond, they formed a diverse and spirited group of faithful, joined by representatives from the Scouts and students and teachers from Lecale Trinity Grammar School, who helped carry the statue’s plinth under the guidance of Ms. Magill
Along the route, Orla Sheehan led the distribution of Rosaries, while hymns and prayers filled the air. Many residents stepped out from their homes to greet the passing procession, offering their prayers and support
A Fitting Welcome in Downpatrick
Upon arrival in Downpatrick, the PSNI ensured a safe passage through the town center, halting traffic along Market Street as the Sacred Heart Pilgrim Statue made its way to St. Patrick’s Church. There, a Guard of Honour formed by the Downpatrick Cubs stood ready to receive the sacred image
The pilgrimage concluded with Mass and Benediction, celebrated by Fr Toland and concelebrated by Fr Henry McCann, bringing a deeply spiritual close to the evening
Continuing the Journey of Devotion
On Tuesday, a Holy Hour to the Sacred Heart, led by Deacon Breen, provided another opportunity for reflection and prayer. From there, the Pilgrim Statue continues its journey through the diocese, with its next stop in the Parish of Loughinisland
This sacred journey of the Sacred Heart Pilgrim Statue is a profound reminder of Christ’s love and an invitation to renew our devotion in this Jubilee Year of Hope
